Ammonoids and quantitative biochronology - A unitary association perspective
2015
Ammonoid evolutionary changes have long been recognized to be excellent time markers. They are the major macrofossil group to date and correlate Paleozoic and Mesozoic marine strata. Originations and extinctions of ammonoid species are commonly used to define GSSPs and build high resolution biozonations. Biochronology is now an advanced field with the recent development of computerized, quantitative methods yielding robust biochronological schemes. It has been demonstrated that such quantitative biochronological methods are very efficient to resolve (often complex) biostratigraphic contradictions and produce accurate and high resolution biozonations, thus enabling precise dating and correla…
From Biology to Linguistics
2018
If we want to get to the bottom of the definition of ἄρθρον in the Poetics, in my opinion we have to work hard in several directions. First of all, it should be vigorously emphasized that the definitions of σύνδeσμος and ἄρθρον in the Poetics are aimed at the subsequent definition of λόγος [This is very aptly pointed out already in Bywater (1909, p. 270).]. This definition recognizes two types of λόγος: the λόγος that is unitary by itself and the λόγος that is unitary thanks to a connector (Poet. See Met. Ζ 4, 1030 a 9, b 5-10; H6, 1045 a 12-14.). Now, if th…
Sui gruppi unitari finitari e sulla congettura di dieudonné
1996
In this paper we consider some questions concerning unitary spaces (V, h), even though (V, h) is not finitely generated.
On the stability of the Serrin problem
2008
We investigate stability issues concerning the radial symmetry of solutions to Serrin's overdetermined problems. In particular, we show that, if $u$ is a solution to $\Delta u=n$ in a smooth domain $\Omega \subset \rn$, $u=0$ on $\partial\Omega$ and $|Du|$ is close to 1 on $\partial\Omega$, then $\Omega$ is close to the union of a certain number of disjoint unitary balls.
Unitary coupled channel analysis of theΛ(1520)resonance
2006
We study the (1520) resonance in a coupled-channel approach involving the π (1385) ,K (1530), ¯ KN, and π channels. Implementing unitarity in coupled channels, we make an analysis of the relative importance of the different mechanisms that contribute to the dynamical structure of this resonance. From experimental information on some partial wave amplitudes and constraints imposed by unitarity, we get a comprehensive description of the amplitudes and hence the couplings to the different channels. We test these amplitudes in different reactions like K − p → π π, γp → K + K − p, γp → K + π 0 π 0 ,a ndπ − p → K 0 K − p and find a fair
Resonances in chiral unitary approaches
2008
The extension of chiral theories to the description of resonances, via the incorporation of unitarity in coupled channels, has provided us with a new theoretical perspective on the nature of some of the observed excited hadrons. In this contribution some of the early achievements in the field of baryonic resonances are reviewed, the recent evidence of the two-pole nature of the Lambda(1405) is discussed and results on charmed baryon resonances are presented.
Alternative single-reference coupled cluster approaches for multireference problems: the simpler, the better.
2011
We report a general implementation of alternative formulations of single-reference coupled cluster theory (extended, unitary, and variational) with arbitrary-order truncation of the cluster operator. These methods are applied to compute the energy of Ne and the equilibrium properties of HF and C(2). Potential energy curves for the dissociation of HF and the BeH(2) model computed with the extended, variational, and unitary coupled cluster approaches are compared to those obtained from the multireference coupled cluster approach of Mukherjee et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 110, 6171 (1999)] and the internally contracted multireference coupled cluster approach [F. A. Evangelista and J. Gauss, J. Chem. …
Full-body illusions and minimal phenomenal selfhood.
2008
We highlight the latest research on body perception and self-consciousness, but argue that despite these achievements, central aspects have remained unexplored, namely, global aspects of bodily self-consciousness. Researchers investigated central representations of body parts and actions involving these, but neglected the global and unitary character of self-consciousness, the ‘I’ of experience and behaviour. We ask, what are the minimally sufficient conditions for the appearance of a phenomenal self, that is, the fundamental conscious experience of being someone? What are necessary conditions for self-consciousness in any type of system? We offer conceptual clarifications, discuss recent e…
A STUDY OF THE πN SCATTERING DATA WITH JP = 3/2- AND A PROOF OF THE EXISTENCE OF THE N*(1700)
2014
Using an interaction extracted from the local hidden gauge Lagrangians and the coupled channels ρN (s-wave), πN (d-wave), πΔ (s-wave) and πΔ (d-wave), we look in the region of [Formula: see text] and we find two resonances dynamically generated which are naturally associated to the N*(1520)(3/2-) and N*(1700)(3/2-). The N*(1700)(3/2-) appears neatly as a pole in the complex plane. The free parameters of the theory are chosen to fit the πN (d-wave) data. The unitary coupled channel approach followed here, in connection with the experimental data, leads automatically to a pole in the 1700 MeV region and makes this second 3/2- resonance unavoidable.
Generators of Random Processes in Ultrametric Spaces and Their Spectra
2009
The L 2(\( \mathbb{S} \)) space of square integrable functions on an ultrametric space \( \mathbb{S} \) has rather specific structure. As a consequence in a natural way there appear in L 2(\( \mathbb{S} \)) the operators of which unitary counterparts in L 2(ℝn) would be difficult to construct. Such class of self-adjoint operators emerge from theory of random processes on ultrametric spaces. In this paper we collect known material on spectral properties of the generators of random processes on \( \mathbb{S}_B \) an ultrametric space of sequences. (The set of p-adic numbers is a subset of \( \mathbb{S}_B \).) Then we discuss structure of the eigenspaces of the generators.
